The public sector employee argument: In exchange for giving up a possible chance to gain an exceptional raise for meritorious service, or individually negotiate conditions at unpredictable times during the year, we will enter into a contract that allows the government to accurately forecast its payroll obligation over several years. Yes, private sector jobs paid better during the boom times and public sector jobs come with a lot of mickey mouse regulations (As a private sector employee, it's not unreasonable for me to expect the break room to have a "company microwave" but teachers have to pitch in to buy their own

In Queensland my state, in Australia. Public sector workers account for 35% - 40% of employees. Which leads to major problems because the public sector union can essentially vote in and out governments so no one can change the situations. The average wage in Australia is $52,000. The average public sector worker earns $62,000. Talk about a joke.

As a Californian who has watched the politicians bankrupt our proud and prosperous state, I couldn't agree with you more. Some state workers will need to be reduced and many unnecessary costs eliminated.

During the good times, our school and fire districts wasted our taxpayer money shamelessly. Now, they are in disbelief that they may need to scale back and reduce costs. This is normal during a recession.

I also argree that unions are part of the problem with the public sector. It should be considered a privilege to serve the public and employees who don't like it are free to get a job in the private sector.

My vote is to start by eliminating pensions for elected officials. Since taxpayers don't receive pensions, it seems unfair that our politicians do. They should get a matching 401K, like those in the private sector.
