I was just over at one of my favorite blogs, It’s Just Money, hosted by a person I’ve coined LAMoneyDude, and he had a post titled, “Living Paycheck to Paycheck: Reality vs. WTF.” In case you didn’t know what WTF means, here’s a link.
The term “living paycheck to paycheck” definitely has a different meaning depending on who you are and whether you’re looking at it from above (making more) or below (making less). For me, it means being able to survive on the money you bring in every week. No luxuries, just necessities. Apparently to some, it means spending up to how much you make each week…hmph.
So here I am reading this post, and I realize, “Wow, last week I was looking at it from above, and now this week, I could be looking at it from below…sort of.” Granted, I do not consider myself living paycheck to paycheck, however I could easily get into this mode as if I were…just to save. Hey my incomes been cut by almost 90%…the upcoming months will be the real test to see if I can manage my expenses.
What’s your definition of living paycheck to paycheck? Are you a Schuett or a Gonzalez?

Welcome back Freedumb! I thought you were going to be MIA for ages!
Interesting article, I can honestly say that I am not living from paycheck to paycheck. I have a one month buffer but only that. I dont think about paydays except to fill up the coffers for next month but that fear of being out on the street still finds me once in a while.
One thing the article didnt mention was if either family is receiving any non-monetary help from extended family. That can make a difference in getting the ends to meet.
Interesting though!

I feel similar, you are not living paycheck to paycheck unless you are only buying the necessities. When you are buy things that are not necessary to live, you are NOT just getting by.
You are instead acting like a “money” fool.

the term is overused. there are many people who claim living paycheck-to-paycheck who just have bad budgeting. with that said, if you earn a paycheck you are in fact living paycheck to paycheck even if you do budget. we have a substantial nestegg, but still live paycheck to paycheck. if we did not, then we’d be eating savings.
