Buying a New Notebook Computer? Might Want To Read This…

18 Sep

My current notebook is over 2 years old now, so I’m thinking of purchasing a new notebook soon.  I made the switch from desktops to notebooks because:

  • Notebooks are just so much more convenient.  Especially with the advent of wireless technologies.
  • I’ve also outgrown my “must have the most powerful computer in the world” phase where I would want to upgrade every single component tirelessly trying to keep up with the ridiculous amounts of new technology coming out.
  • Takes up less desk space.
  • Prices are getting much more comparable to similarly equipped desktop computers.

I’m planning to purchase a new computer sometime around December or January 07.

Technical Colleges: Are Their Degrees Worth Anything?

18 Sep

My first thought is, no.  Why would someone want to pay big dollars for a degree from an online and/or national college?  It’s like a cookie cutter university…

The idea seems foreign to me…with community colleges and public universities available, why would anyone coose the technical college route?

I did find some dirt on Phoenix here & here, but are ITT and Heald legitimate?  Also, I know U of Phoenix has a big office in downtown Honolulu.  I’ve also slightly recall reading that UoP stocks are actually doing quite well.

What do you think about them?

NFL Picks: Week 2 [5-3-0, 0.625]

15 Sep

This week looks tough.  I had a hard time making these picks, except for the KC and Detroit picks.  The rest were real iffy.  Usually by week 3, you can kind of tell if a team is real or one/two week wonders.  I think fantasy scoring will be much larger this week, and I don’t expect any shutouts.

Friday! Update: 1000 Spams and Counting, Sad PF Blogger, and Bullying Special 09.15.2006

15 Sep

I can’t believe how much spam I’ve been getting recently!  1,002 at present count.  Thank goodness I don’t have to manually delete a majority, and I’ve been finding only a small amount has actually been real comments.  I apologize if you’ve been a victim of my spam filter.

This week, I’d like to focus on the folks behind the blogging, if you haven’t seen this post from Tired But Happy, check it out.  She’s “hit a lull,” and I can relate.  Blogging is great, but like anything in life, sometimes interest is lost, we don’t have enough time to keep it up, etc.  Feedback and comments make all the difference, so head on over, and say hello.

…And This Is Why I Could Never Be a Realtor.

15 Sep

What is the reason you ask?  Because if I thought prices were coming down, I wouldn’t be able to sell a house.  If the housing market entered a 2 or 3 year housing slump, I would be broke.

In the Sunday newspaper this weekend, in the homes section, the executive vice president of Prudential Locations LLC, Scott Higashi says, “There is no crash on the horizon,” he says.  “I think sales will continue to drop slowly, and prices will continue to appreciate slowly.  Median prices land around a 7- to 8-percent increase by the end of 2006.”

He says he “thinks” sales will continue to drop, but you can assume he also “knows” there is no crash.  Interesting.  I wonder where and how much he bought his crystal ball for.

Investing In Foreign Currency. Help a Rookie Out…

15 Sep

I’ve been considering Everbank.com, thanks to Frugal @ My 1st Million at 33.  It’s also because of a comment I received from Matt, asking if I’m worried about the value of the US dollar, and to that I replied:

Matt, Most of my cash is in savings and CDs. Yes, I do have worries. It’s something I’ve been considering…I’m not quite sure what to do though to combat any possible severe decline in US dollar values. Do you have any recommendations? I may post about this later.

Five Years Into My Career: What I’ve Learned So Far

14 Sep

It’s actually been about 6 years now, but 5 is a nice number.  I’ll do one of these again when I hit 10 years.  :)

  • Work smarter not harder:  Learn the in’s and out’s of your job.  What’s important and what’s not.  Prioritize.  The goal of the game is perseverance and doing the best you can during the game.  If you expect to be working for 30+ years, don’t burn yourself out.
  • CYA:  What’s CYA you ask?  “Cover Your *ss”  That’s right.  Always have evidence that you’ve done your work.  Don’t accept a verbal statement since verbal is not as convincing as an email thread.
  • Speak up:  Don’t sit back and let everyone get all the attention.  If you don’t speak up, your co-workers, manager will think you have no opinion.  Plus they may “forget” you’re even there.  That makes for easy termination come “resource reallocation” time.
