The Ethics Of Advertising…I Almost Turned One Down.

27 Sep

If you look at the top right side bar, you’ll notice a section called “Site Sponsors.”  All of these ads have been approved by myself.

Today, I got a request to approve an ad that says, “100% No Money Down Home Loans.”  I debated approving the ad for about 5 minutes, then ultimately I clicked ‘Approve’.  I know, I know, you think I ‘sold out’ right?  Well…

You see, I don’t believe 100% No Money Down Home Loans are right for this market.  It’s a setup for disaster.  At the same time, I believe that ultimately, with all the information out there, the choice is up to the borrower.  If a sponsor still wants to post their message, then so be it.  If you understand the risks, and can somehow make it work for you, then by all means go ahead.  My sponsors don’t necessarily reflect my views or vice-versa, but it doesn’t mean I’ll reject them because I don’t agree with it.

Similar to my stand on most issues, I do believe the decisions is up to the individual.  I have strong beliefs on certain issues, but ultimately, I do not believe my beliefs and views should be forced upon anyone else, that’s YOUR decision.  Anti-Abortion?  Pro-Choice?  Gay marriage?  Liberal or Conservative?  I have beliefs, yes.  But will I force them on anyone else?  Absolutely not.

I’d reject ads that sold innappropriate and illegal things like porn, drugs, and so on, but a 100% no money down loan?  Dangerous, yes…but innappropriate and illegal, no.  Please criticize me if you’d like…I like receiving criticism, as it makes me think about things I may have otherwise not have.

    Sellout!

Just kidding. Great picks last week in the NFL. Maybe I’ll copy your picks for my office pool next week.

It’s not really criticism, but I don’t think the line between appropriate and inappropriate is as clear as you’re suggesting. Personally, I would allow ads for pot on my site before I’d allow ads for, say, payday loans.

And yet, pot is mostly illegal here is the USA and payday loans are not (although they probably should be). I think everyone will have a different opinion on where to draw the line on advertisements. Even on TV, things have changed. You used to see lots of ads for cigarettes but none for feminine products or non-over-the-counter drugs. Now it’s the other way around. Freedumb – only you can decide what is not acceptable for your site.

    LMG,

s/100/30, really? Interesting…payday loan places are all over the place here…

Kate, Thanks…I guess ultimately, if ads don’t work, it’ll stop. Or, in the case of tobacco, inappropriate someone will try to stop them…
