I hate shopping for everyday items because…I have a problem. You already know I’m a “tease shopper,” but tack on the more serious problem of mine, and shopping becomes a nightmare. What’s my problem you ask? It’s my inability to purchase something that’s not the “best deal.”
If I have a specific brand I use, then generally this is not as much of a problem, but when it’s an item that I don’t really have any brand loyalty, it’s a major one. A simple example is floss. I can stand in the middle of the aisle looking at 4 different brands of floss.
- How much is it per yard?
- What type of material is it?
- Is it minty or regular?
Some more complicated examples are over the counter medication, sunscreen, deodorant, and pet treats. Let’s dig into deodorant.
- Price
- Fancy features like quick dry, “power strip,” long lasting
- Smell…I hate this part. It’s so subjective…especially when there are 2 or 3 that smell good…
- Ingredients (Aluminum is a no-no)
- Spray or solid
- Do I really need a new deodorant stick considering I still have half of my old one
I can take 20 minutes deciding which deodorant to buy.
The worst item for me? TOOTHPASTE. I have no brand loyalty when it comes to toothpaste. Which do I choose? ERRRRRR…And don’t go into Dog Shampoo…GRRRRR.
You may remember this graphic? (It’s a joke by the way!
Or is it?)

Well here’s the modified version for me…

I hate shopping at (self-serve)Home Depot & Walmart. Nobody knows anything and the stores are dirty. *that’s not my department*

Larry, oh that’s a pet peeve of mine! When people that work there say, “sorry, not my department.”

I feel your pain. When I find myself agonizing over which toothpaste to buy, I think about the value of my time. If I’m out of toothpaste and I don’t have time to research it and buy in bulk, I go to the nearest discount store and buy my favorite brand. I buy the cheapest size tube, based on unit pricing. I buy just enough to last me until I know I will have time to shop carefully.
I congratulate myself for saving time and stress… in and out of the store quickly.

I’m a little concerned about you Freedumb! Over an hour is a LONG time to take to get a tube of toothpaste.
More seriously, I’m not sure that the graphs above reflect gender differences as much as they do personality types. My ex was an outgoing salesman and he always wanted to go into every department of every store. I’m an anal accountant and want to get in, buy what I came for and get out. I have other female friends who don’t like to shop and men friends that do.
Regardless, the graphs are amusing. They remind me of the old Family Circle cartoons where Billy would wander all over the neighborhood to tell his brother in the next room to come to dinner.

I don’t plan to spend an hour, it just happens…I look at one product…then I look at another…and another…and I start comparing…It gets bad sometimes.
I do like when I can get in and out quickly…obviously if I have time restraints, I just buy the cheapest…
