Poll: Working From Home, What’s It Worth?

29 Aug

I’m curious, what kind of value would you place on working from home?  Pennies?  A couple hundred?  A few thousand?  More?  Not a benefit.  Leave a comment with the specific value you’d give it…

EDIT:  Annually…I was thinking along the lines of a new offer…sorry, I should’ve been clearer.

Since the closing of our office up here a few years ago I work from home full time now. For myself, to accept the exact same position I’m in now with the same benefits and opportunities, the offer would have to be around 10k more than I am making.

Per year? Per month? I’d say about $300/month.

Chuck, Wow. I never considered working from home that much of a benefit…Interesting.

S/100/30, Thanks for bringing it up! I made an edit to the post…

If you are thinking dollars and cents. When I made the move, my fuel expense went down $5k a year. I stopped paying over $500 in tolls. My drycleaning bill is nothing, maybe 2 visits a year. Lunches – big money saved here – I eat at home. Snacks too, you don’t realize how much you spend when your doing it. Office parties, coworker gifts, donuts etc. Big money saved, never really tracked.

I enjoy working with a group of people, so I’m not sure I’d want to work from home full-time. I do set up time once in a while to work on projects at home.

Love the picture of Brownie today. That hat is a very hip look.

I agree with D’s comments. At the office used to eat out 3-4 days a week, get snacks, gas, wear and tear on my car, etc

Not to mention how much extra free time I have not having to commute 30 min to an hour every day. Also can do chores / errands more easily at lunchtime so my time after work is more enjoyable. Nothing beats the alarm going off at 7:50 when you have to be to work at 8:00.

D, Yeah, I never thought about that…but there are expenses to working in an office…I forgot your worked from home too…

Kate, I think working from home 80% of the time is perfect. I admit going into the office every now and then is nice. I’ll write more on what I’ve found as pros and cons to working from home later.

Brownie says thanks! By the way, if you refresh, you should see a couple new pics…I added a randomizer…

Chuck, now I can kind of see the 10k value you put on it…And yes, getting up 10 mins before you need to be at work is nice.

Where I live, in the winter we get 300 inches of snow a year. To not have to get up an hour early to shovel out three feet of snow in my driveway after a storm is definitely worth over a few grand a year. I like shoveling, but just not before I have to go to work.

It would probably take an offer that’s $5,000 more than what I am making now working at home to leave. Maybe even more – it depends on if the offer is in the middle of winter ;)

Tricia, lol…I would hate to shovel snow in the morning…I’m just not a morning person in the first place…I’d be that “grumpy man” shoving snow in the mornings…
