Poll Analysis: “Spend 50k or Invest 25k?” & “Site Too Busy?”

09 Aug

The results are in!  Actually, the polls are still open, so by the time you read this the results might be a little different, but I don’t think the general trend will change.

Poll Analysis:  Is this site too busy?

    No, it’s great! (8%)
    Tolerable. (54%)
    Yes, I have a headache! (38%)
    Total Votes: 24

I’m happy that at least a majority of folks (62%) visiting my site find it “tolerable.”  I will be working to improve my site as time goes on, hopefully improvements that will make it easier on the eyes.  I do want to address the concerns of the 38% who are getting headaches visiting my site.  :(   In fact, I’ve already implemented some suggestions:

  • Decreasing the size of the header image.
  • Moved Welcome to top.
  • Decreased the size of my nav bar above single posts.

Plans:

  • Add a little more variation in color to distinguish side bar from the center, the content.
  • Try to reduce the “text assault.”

Just because I haven’t implemented your suggestion, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it.

Poll Analysis:  50k to spend or 25k to invest?

    $50k to spend (28%)
    $25k to invest (72%)

Total Votes: 53I really appreciate all the interest this poll garnered.  I’m actually shocked that the poll has reached 50+ votes!  I sure hope that in the future, you will be presented with an opportunity to actually make a similar decision…Hey if this site becomes that successful, I’ll personally sponsor a contest!  :D   We can dream can’t we!

You can see a clear majority would invest 25k rather than take 50k to spend on non-tangible items, ex. a vacation.  I can honestly see both sides of the argument, and both sides has strong points.

As a finance minded individual, the thought of wrecklessly spending 50k would cause severe trauma to my psyche, but make it a must that I spend the money within a certain time or lose it, and I think I could have the best time in the world!  Hey Freedumb, “Spend or lose it!”  Nice.  But, then the idea of having 25k to invest.  In 20 years @ 10% growth yearly, that 25k would turn into $184k!  Of course, the big IF is whether or not 10% is achievable.  But who knows, you could average 5% or 20%.  So no matter what, the arguments are valid.  A person who spends 50k on a family vacation my value that time highly, but someone who invest 25k and gets a return of 184k might value that the same as well.

On a side note, I am curious as to what makes someone answer a poll and what doesn’t?  I think it all starts with the question.  Then does it take a lot of work to answer the question?  Finally, is it something that could apply to that particular reader.  I’ll try to think of some other interesting questions in the future.

Thank you all for your participation!  PS.  You can still vote!  I don’t plan on closing the polls for now.

I really like reading your blog but there is just so much text. I can see where it gives peopl headaches. If you look to the right or left of the blog its like looking at jumble of letters.

Okay, I’ve made a few more changes…I _think_ I’m going to stick with this layout for sometime…

I think they are less intrusive ads…more focus on content…color variation…

I hope it’s reduced the text assault somewhat.
