well im a 14 year old girl.I just stumbed acrossed this n i felt so upset for those pour kids who lost their lives because of over grown bullys that have to pick on smaller kids to feel better inside. i read the story of Jared Benjamin High n other kides how died.these stories have open my eyes.:shock: So im saying im sorry for all the familys who lost their child to bullying.:cry:

Thank you all for finding Ryan and understanding. I beat myself up everyday but its helpful to know others are benefiting from learning from my mistakes as his dad. PrimeTime will air a special about him and the issues on 9/14 8pm est.

mapgirl, thanks for the feedback.

There are so many disconnects, it’s pretty challenging to get the problem resolved…

- Kids don’t think adults care
- Adults don’t think it’s _that_ serious
- Schools don’t take it seriously
- Being a bully is cool
- Depression can be easy to hide

I don’t think enough parents watch out for depression in kids. It’s usually pretty obvious, but most folks write it off as growing pains. Bullying is terrible, but it’s unbelievable that another child would actually encourage the suicide of another person.

As soon as a suicidal ideation is formed, that is the number one reason to send someone into therapy for depression. If you read the depression inventory checklists (Beck is probably the most common), you will see that as soon as someone marks down suicidal thoughts, they are an immediate candidate for treatment, even if they don’t mark anything else on the list.

If you are being bullied, tell the school nurse. They are obligated as a medical professional to deal with the mental health issue, even if the school principal/teacher/administrator will not.

Ryan’s story breaks my heart.

Thank you for this post. One of my relatives was really bullied in school and it’s really affected his performance, etc. He’s out of that situation now, but it’s a really important topic for people to see.
